A pulled muscle (also referred to as a muscle strain) causes most episodes of back pain. When injured the muscles can become inflamed and spasm, causing low back pain and significant stiffness.
A pulled back muscle can create a surprising amount of pain. However, not much can be done for a strained back muscle except for rest, applying hot and cold therapy and taking pain relievers.
Ice massage and ice application is generally most helpful during the first 48 hours following an injury that strains the back muscles. After this initial period, heat therapy is probably more beneficial to the healing process. For some people, alternating heat therapy with cold application such as ice massage therapy provides the most pain relief.
Moist heat, such as a warm bath or whirlpool, is thought to aid the healing process by increasing circulation and relaxing muscle spasms.
A pulled back muscle occurs when the muscle is stretched too far, causing small tears within the muscle.
If you haven’t already, you probably will at some point experience a pulled back muscle. It could happen during a game of golf, while cleaning the garage, or even on the dance floor.
A pulled back muscle may not sound like a serious injury, but the low back pain can be surprisingly severe. Fortunately, pulled back muscles usually heal within days or weeks.
While that pulled back muscle may seem to come on suddenly, chances are it was a long time coming. You could be ignoring some very important warning signs. Which means if you’re not in pain now, you might want to sit up and pay attention.
Do you sit in a chair all day? Do you exercise incorrectly? Are you under tremendous stress? Are you dehydrated? Are you substantially overweight?
Did you honestly answer yes to one or more of those questions? If so, then you’re at greater risk of muscle imbalances, trigger point pain, and at higher risk for injuries like a pulled back muscle.

Back pain (also known as dorsalgia) is pain felt in the back that usually originates from the muscles, nerves, bones, joints or other structures in the spine.
Back pain may have a sudden onset or can be a chronic pain; it can be constant or intermittent, stay in one place or radiate to other areas. It may be a dull ache, or a sharp or piercing or burning sensation. The pain may radiate into the arms and hands as well as the legs or feet, and may include symptoms other than pain, such as weakness, numbness or tingling.
Until recently, researchers believed that back pain would heal on its own. However, recent studies show that this is not true. The studies revealed that most back pain that is left untreated, may dissipate temporarily, but will most likely return on a later day, and often times worse than before. It is very important to not leave low back pain untreated and seek doctor care to treat and correct the true cause of the pain.
